Death through ringtones

‚An audio-visual retrospective of the noughties‘

This 2011 installation by the artists Tobias Hassels and Mario Michel was an audio-visual retrospective of the last decade and invited the audience to reflect about those years once again. And also to finally wave goodbye to the music industry as we knew it.

The intricate installation transformed the space into a labyrinth of ringtone sounds, for getting from the start to the end the audience had to make their way through tunnels with more then 20 different mp3 players and speakers playing loops of ringtones continously and at the same time.

While passing the different speakers the closer you came to a speaker the better you understood what it was about, leading to disbelieve and shock.

Framed by two living sculptures and ringtone videos screened on the walls, Death Through Ringtones confronted the audience with the sheer madness of the ringtone industry generating a shrill loud cathartic soundscape of ubiquitous sounds that surprisingly kept people inside the room for hours, getting more and more sucked into listening to the ringtone loops as an unique piece of new music.
